The origins of the Charleston dance style :
The Charleston was particularly popular in America in the 1920s as a rhythmic and highly tuned dance. It is indeed a rather “syncopated” dance because this style of dance emphasizes musical rhythms that are not enhanced by the steps and movements.
Its name comes from Charleston, South Carolina, and although it is usually danced by two or more people, the Charleston can be danced alone or in a group.
By the way, yes, the Charleston dance was originally a solo dance performed by African-Americans.
The Charleston was accepted as a ballroom dance in 1926, with Josephine Baker among its most famous performers.
