It is for this reason that Dance All Styles since 2019 helps some of its partner teachers to train in the major styles of medieval dance.

The Pavane
The Pavane is a medieval dance very famous in the 16th century. It is mainly danced by royalty all over Europe.
It is a style of slow dance. With your partner, it is a simple couple dance that involves walking in “mirror effect” with your partner and is made up of many movements.
Small anecdote: the expression Pavane”to strut”, comes from this style of dance which was danced slowly.

The Ductia
The ductia is a medieval dance style of French origin (cocorico!). This style of medieval dance is very popular in the 12th and 13th centuries.
You certainly know the expression “One dances and sings there”. Well contrary to the Pavane; in addition to dancing it, it must be sung with typical dance steps of the time which consists mainly in dancing in front of your rider.

The Low Dance
The bass dance is certainly one of the most famous medieval dances.
The bass dance has its origins in the courts of the kings and queens of Europe in the 15th century.
Numerous poems and works describe this medieval dance style as being like a mythical style at the time.
Through its rotations, steps and movements, the bass dance is more technical than it seems.
It is danced in groups. Each dancer must be in total harmony with the other participants and beware of the one who will make a wrong step.

Le Tourdion or Tordion
The Tourdion, also called Tordion, is a medieval dance style very popular in USA in the 16th century.
This medieval dance style will disappear from the Royalty of USA a few decades later.
Made up of several jumps and lively footwork in harmony with the music, this medieval dance style can be danced alone, with a partner or in a circle.

The Saltarello (or Saltarelle in French)
Very popular in the thirteenth century, this style of dance originates in Italy it is a medieval dance style very joyful and often danced during special occasions in the Middle Ages.

Unlike most medieval dance styles, Saltarelle can be danced by men with men and by women with women.

The Tresque
This style of medieval dance is typical of the image one has of the dance style at the time.
Born in the 14th century, the Tresca, appears in Italy. It is mostly danced in a circle. The steps are performed in a circle, hand in hand. They are simple, harmonious and effective dance steps.

The Branle
The dance style “Branle” appeared just before the Renaissance, which makes it, despite these 500 years, the most modern dance style on this page.
Unlike the other cited styles, the Branle, or should we say the Branles are a large family of medieval dance styles.
Very popular in Europe just like the Tresque, the Branle is essentially danced in round or in couple with his partner like the Ductia: in perfect adequacy with the instruments and the singers.

The Tarantella
The Tarantella, (like the Tresca or the Saltarello) is born in Italy. It belongs to the families of medieval traditional dance.
Anecdote: the Tarantellas are at the base of the therapeutic dances very popular in the region of the south of Italy.
This dance of the people is danced mostly on rhythmic steps joined by clapping hands. Clapping often follows the dance steps in medieval dances.

La Moresque
The medieval dance of the Moresque originated in Spain
They exported it and made it one of the most popular dances between the 12th and 17th centuries.
The moresque can be danced alone, as well as in couples or groups.

L’Estampie
The estampie is a dance that has been documented as early as the 12th century, making it the oldest of the dances on this page devoted to the show and the medieval dance class, as well as the history of each of these styles.
This dance originated in Germany (Germania a while back).
It is mostly danced with a partner and is made up of walking, jumping and rotational movement. However, it can also be danced in a circle within a group.

La Carole
La Carole gathers several styles of medieval dances.
This dance is mostly danced by women even if men can also participate.
There are few sources and writings about this dance. What is known is that it is mostly danced in circles. The round in medieval dances is synonymous with brotherhood and joy.
Carole’s steps are made up of side steps and back and forth, this is mainly what we will remember about this style of dance.
